The Montana women's tennis team once again put on a gritty performance in doubles and were in the running for wins in singles against a Mountain West opponent, but the upset was not to be for the Griz as Boise State defended its home court with a 6-1 win.
Â
Senior Catherine Orfanos again led the Griz in the singles round, taking a straight-set win on court five for UM's only victory of the day, a 6-4, 6-2 win over BSU's Vanessa Timm.
Â
After a near miss on an upset at Utah State, Orfanos entered the match in Boise looking to prove a point and came up with the winning game plan.
Â
"I was just really fired up going into the match, especially coming off a close match on Sunday. I was determined," Orfanos said. "We were having long rallies from the baseline, so I knew if I was able to bring her forward I could pass her, which was effective."
Â
UM now falls to 6-10 on the season and is 0-2 on its spring break trip, with Big Sky matches against Weber State, and Idaho State left to play on the week-long trip south.
Â
In another repeat of the Utah State match, Montana hung tough with the Broncos on courts one and three in doubles play, nearly pulling off the upset on each.
Â
The round started with UM needing to battle back from an early 1-0 deficit after a 6-1 loss on court two.
Â
Cam Kincaid and Bianca Bostrom were solid in their defense in a 5-6 loss on court one; trading blows with BSU's Dokic/Nosek pair in a back-and-forth match.Â
Â
Julia Ronney and Lidia Dukic were also in a position for a win on court three, tied late in the match at four before dropping a 6-4 decision that clinched the point for the Broncos.
Â
Montana fell behind 3-0 quickly in the singles round, with Bostrom and Joanlanne falling 6-1, 6-4 and 6-4, 6-4, respectively.
Â
Orfanos then got the Griz on the board with her court five win to make it a 3-1 match.
Â
Meanwhile, Dukic was battling for another Grizzly point on court four, bouncing back from a 6-0 first set loss to force a tiebreaker with a 6-4 win in the second set. She eventually fell in the break point 10-7.
Â
The Griz now travel back to the Beehive State for a conference dual with Weber State in Ogden on Wednesday.
Â
At 2-3 in Big Sky play, Montana will look to move to .500 in league play and up from No. 8 on the conference table. Weber currently sits at 4-1 in Big Sky play in a tie for second place with Idaho.
Â
First serves against the Wildcats are scheduled for 11:30 a.m.
