Montana makes familiar trek down I-90
1/17/2019 5:37:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
If it feels like the Montana track & field team is spending more time in Bozeman than it is in Missoula, it's because it's almost true. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Â
The Grizzlies will travel east to Bozeman for the third time this month on Friday, one of seven times they will do so during the indoor season. Montana will travel to just two other locations (Seattle and Moscow). That includes the Big Sky Championships, which this year will be held in… Bozeman.
Â
"We're more familiar with that track than anyone but MSU," head coach Brian Schweyen said. "It sometimes can get a little bit monotonous, but I also think it works in our favor come conference championship time."
Â
Friday's MSU Dual Invitational will look similar to last week's MSU Open in terms of the events and athletes competing. Schweyen hopes it also looks similar in terms of results.
Â
During last week's MSU Open, Montana won 12 of 25 individual events against the state's top athletes, including several wins by freshmen or redshirts from a year ago. All things considered, it was a great starting point for the team.
Â
"I saw a lot of the young kids stepping up and performing well, in multiple events across the board," Schweyen said. "I was excited to see how they competed, and how they've trained under the leadership of the upperclassmen. You never know what you're going to get coming back from break, but for the most part, I was really pleased with what we saw."
Â
The big thing now will be sustaining that success and building off of it.
Â
"It's a Monday through Saturday thing," Schweyen said. "When you're training with a purpose you bring a little more intensity and practice means a little more.
Â
"Let's go and improve upon what we did last week. Jitters should be gone. Every day is important, no matter what day it is or what meet it is. If you take every day and focus on improving that day, it shouldn't be any different. I'm looking for us to go in with the right mindset and improve on a strong start from last week."
Â
Action on Friday begins at 2:30 p.m. with the weight throw and shot put. Track events will begin at 4:30 p.m. In addition to Montana and Montana State, athletes from Idaho State and Utah State will be competing. Fans can follow live results and watch MSU's live stream on Pluto TV and WatchBigSky.com.
