Griz sweep the Peak Fall Championship

With the underclassmen taking center stage, the Montana men's tennis team cleaned house on its home court this weekend, sweeping the men's open doubles and singles draws of the Peak Fall Championships in Missoula.
With an eye toward getting his freshmen and sophomores more live reps on in their primary spring venue, Grizzly head coach Jason Brown entered the younger Griz in the local tourney that featured some regional college players, top Canadians, and veteran seniors as well.
Despite the varied and talented field, Brown had big expectations for his team, and they didn't disappoint.
"I loved getting to play at home and having these guys experience what that feels like before the spring when it really matters, and they responded well," said Brown.
"I also love how these guys dealt with the pressure of being expected to win. It's a different sort of pressure, and they handled it well."
Grizzly sophomores Milo Benn and Pontus Hallgren advanced to face each other in the singles championship match with Benn continuing his strong form this fall to get a title win.
Benn then made it a two-fer, picking up a championship in doubles as well with his partner Hallgren, who defeated a team of other Griz in Oisin Shaffrey and Cameron Isbell in the final match to win a second title.
Overall, three of the four singles semifinalists were Grizzlies, and all three UM doubles pairs advanced to the semifinal as well, with the Griz claiming titles in both.
Benn, now in his second year at UM since arriving from Wellington, New Zealand, has been one of Montana's top performers during the fall tournament season, advancing to the quarterfinal rounds of both the Bedford Cup in the Mountains at Air Force, and the Idaho State Invitational.
With a win at the Peak Fall Championship Benn improved his overall fall singles record to 9-3, and looks to be in a position to work his way into the lineup come the spring dual season.
"Milo really trained hard this summer, and it's put him ahead of the game this fall. I think he's really excited about the progress he's made, and I think it's pushing some of his teammates as well when they see how much better at tennis he's gotten over the last 12 months. I'm excited for him," said Brown.
The clean sweep at The Peak is the latest in a run of solid results for the Grizzlies, who entered the week after a posting a pair of Sweet-16 appearances at the ITA Mountain Regional Tourney, where Ludvig Hallgren and Shaffrey each won three matches.
Montana will cap its fall tournament season this week when the Griz head to Spokane for a return to collegiate competition at Gonzaga's Bulldog Classic, Nov. 8-10, at the Stevens Tennis Center.
