The Montana men's tennis team rolled the competition Saturday to win their home opener 6-1 against Whitman College.
"It was nice being at home," said second-year head coach Jason Brown. "Whitman is a really classy team, they have great depth and they put up a great fight."
Brothers Ludvig and Pontus Hallgren won UM's first doubles match of the morning after dominating on court two to go up 3-0. The Hallgren brothers kept their foot on the pedal, finishing the match 6-1.
Meanwhile on court one, lone senior Alex Canellopoulos and junior Max Korkh pushed ahead to a 5-2 lead, finding chemistry after they played their first match together earlier in the season against Gonzaga. Dan Foster and Ben Kirsh kept Whitman's hopes alive after rallying back 5-4 before Canellopoulos swerve would prove to much, taking the first overall doubles point.
Freshmen Ed Pudney and Oisin Shaffrey secured the doubles sweep on court three after continued back and forth play resulted in a tie at 3-3 and a 6-4 victory for the Grizzlies.
On court three, Korkh continued UM's dominance after a solid performance in doubles action propelled him to a 6-1, 6-1 finish winning the first singles competition of the morning. Canellopoulos similarly came out firing, capturing the first set 6-3 but WC's Foster adjusted his play at the net to go ahead in the second set 4-3. He couldn't regain his focus and dropped the second set to Whitman 3-6.
After leaning more on his backhand, Canellopoulos rebounded 4-1 and sealed the match at 6-3 to win the third overall point for Montana. Pudney clinched the last point in straight sets 6-4, 7-6.
"I'm really happy the way Alex stepped up to adversity as a number one and led the way," Brown said.
Pontus Hallgren and Shaffrey rounded out the bottom of the order for UM and didn't disappoint. Shaffrey topped Whitman 6-3, 6-1 in a solid outing while Hallgren wrapped up the duel 6-3, 7-6.
Ludvig Hallgren suffered UM's one loss of the afternoon in a thriller against WC's Kirsh. He won the first set 6-2 and ran out of gas in the second set of a tie breaker6-7. Hallgren ultimately fell short 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.
"We have to make sure when we get ahead in matches that we don't let off the gas," said Brown. "There was some spots where we got ahead and lost focus."
Montana improves their record to 1-1 and hopes to carry their momentum Sunday at Peaks Racquet Club against rival Montana State.
