Griz fall to #46 Tulsa

The Montana women's tennis team didn't have to go far to take on one of the top teams in the country on Saturday, traveling to Bozeman for a neutral-site match against the No. 46 ranked Tulsa Golden Hurricane.
The travel west didn't seem to affect the visitors, however, with Tulsa picking up a 7-0 win over the Grizzlies at the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center.
Despite the lopsided final score, Grizzly head coach Steve Ascher came away with plenty of positives against a team that started the season ranked as high as No. 17.
"We are continuing to play better second sets and make good adjustments. We're also looking to continue to find ways to close the gap and push more sets to tighter outcomes," said Ascher. "It was another solid learning experience."
The loss moves the Griz to 1-9 this season with the lone win coming a week ago against Portland State to get them ahead of the game in the Big Sky Conference race at 1-0.
Meanwhile, the defending American Athletic Conference champion Hurricane improve toe 8-5 as they attempt to return to the NCAA tournament for a second-straight season.
With All-Big Sky sophomore Julia Ronney out of the match as she recovers from a bout with the flu, Ascher was forced to shift his lineup to replace her.
Normally on the No. 4 court, UM senior Nathalie Joanlanne didn't flinch with a move up the ladder, playing at No. 3 for the first time this season.
Joanlanne came out of the gates firing against Tulsa's Shura Poppe, winning the first set 6-4 before Poppe rebounded for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-6 win in a superbreaker.
Joanlanne's was the only set the Grizzlies would take from the Hurricane, however, with the remaining five singles matches all going to Tulsa in straight-sets.
With valuable experience against one of the top teams in the country under their belts, the Griz return to action on March 8 with a key home matchup against Idaho State.
