Griz drop two games in Ogden
4/19/2019 7:55:00 PM | Softball
The Montana softball team opened its three-game series against Weber State with a pair of losses on Friday at Wildcat Softball Field in Ogden, Utah.
Â
The Grizzlies (16-28, 4-7 BSC) lost 5-0 and 5-2 to see their five-game winning streak come to an end.
Â
Montana's lone runs in the doubleheader came on a two-run home run by Cami Sellers in the top of the third in Game 2 that gave the Grizzlies a 2-1 advantage, their only lead of the day.
Â
Sellers would go 3 for 5 for the doubleheader, with a hit in both games, to extend her hitting streak to 17 games, which matches the program record established by Bethany Olea in 2017.
Â
Weber State (19-18, 11-1 BSC) pounded out a dozen hits in Game 1 and eight more in Game 2, which wasn't a surprise. The Wildcats have the Big Sky Conference's top batting average.
Â
What was a surprise was the performance of the three Weber State pitchers who threw on Friday and limited the Grizzlies to two runs and eight hits across 14 innings.
Â
The Wildcats entered the series with an ERA of nearly 5.00 (4.97), but they handed the Grizzlies their first shutout in 18 games in the opener.
Â
Chloe Camarero hit a solo home run off Montana starter Colleen Driscoll in the bottom of the first, and that would turn out to be the game-winning run.
Â
The Wildcats, who out-hit the Grizzlies 12-2 in Game 1, scored three runs off Driscoll in her 2 2/3 innings. They added two more in the bottom of the sixth off Maddy Stensby.
Â
Montana was limited to a Kylie Hayton single in the third and a double by Sellers to lead off the fourth as the Grizzlies matched a season low in hits.
Â
Weber State struck in the bottom of the first in Game 2 as well, scoring on an RBI single by Ashlyn Visser, who would go 2 for 3 with three RBIs in Game 2.
Â
Montana answered in the top of the third, when Sellers connected on her team-leading fifth home run of the season, giving the Grizzlies a 2-1 lead that would be short-lived.
Â
Weber State came right back with three runs on four hits off Montana starter Tristin Achenbach in the bottom half of the inning, then added another in the fourth to win for the 11th time in 12 league games.
Â
Michaela Hood needed just 16 pitches to work 1-2-3 innings in the fifth and sixth in relief of Achenbach, who had three strikeouts after setting a Big Sky record with 16 K's on Tuesday against Carroll.
Â
Sellers and Katie Pippel both had two-hit games in the loss.
Â
The teams will conclude their series on Saturday at noon.
