The Montana men's tennis team opened its fall tournament season with a solid outing against some of the best teams in the region at the Bedford Cup in the Mountains, hosted by the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs.
Sophomore Oisin Shaffrey earned the No. 1 seed in the Silver Draw, and seniors Max Korkh and Ludvig Hallgren earned a five seed in the doubles round as the Griz picked up a total of 16 wins in the two singles and one doubles draw.
"This was a good opening weekend for us," said head coach Jason Brown.
"We picked up some nice wins, the guys played hard, and we got a good sense of where we are as the season ramps up."
In Blue Draw singles, sophomore Ed Pudney picked up a three-set win over Northern Arizona's Alexander Groves before falling to eventual semifinalist Paul Hendrix of Air Force.
Korkh rebounded from an opening-round loss to the eventual finalist from Denver to pick up wins over BYU's Kobe Tran, Tom Pudney of Northern Colorado (Ed Pudney's brother), and Weber State's Paul Ohde in a trip to the consolation final. Pudney and Hallgren also picked up wins in the consolation rounds of the Blue Draw.
After earning a bye as the No. one seed, Shaffrey picked up a win over Northern Colorado's Nick Wade before advancing to the Silver Draw semifinal with a straight-set win over Abilene Christian's Taine Bernhard (6-1, 7-5).
Sophomore Milo Benn also picked up some nice wins in the Silver draw, beating BYU's Garret Vincent 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, and Weber State's Bo-Han Li in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 before falling to the eventual finalist from Air Force.
The Griz now turn their attention to the Big Sky as they head to Pocatello Oct. 4-6 for the Idaho State Invitational.
