SAAC is holding shoe drive Saturday; fans can receive free basketball tickets by donating
1/16/2020 10:11:00 AM | General, Men's Basketball
Montana's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) – which is comprised of student-athletes from each of the university's athletics programs – is holding a shoe drive. Those who participate will receive a free general admission ticket to Saturday's men's basketball game vs. Idaho for every pair of shoes donated.
Any type of new or gently worn shoe will be collected, and any size from youth to adult. Through the non-profit Soles4Souls, shoes will then be delivered to a variety of people and groups in need all across the world.
SAAC is asking for fans to participate to help lower the world's poverty rate while also helping the environment from unnecessary waste.
"It is more than just donating a pair of shoes for someone far away," said SAAC president Darby Henthorn, a javelin thrower on UM's track & field team. "It is giving someone, somewhere, hope. It is giving somebody an opportunity to work, run or play with shoes on their feet.
"It seems like a simple shoe drive, but it is more than that. It is a way to connect to others across the world and help those who might not be as fortunate as we are. Soles4Souls is a great organization created to making the world a better place and giving those in need hope and happiness."
Tipoff on Saturday is scheduled for 7 p.m. Fans are still encouraged to donate, even if they don't need or want a ticket.
