Despite a near-upset in the doubles round, the Montana women's tennis team dropped its first Big Sky Conference match of the season on Thursday, falling 7-0 in straight sets to the defending champion Northern Arizona Lumberjacks in Flagstaff.
Montana falls to 1-7 and 0-1 in league play at the tail end of a brutally difficult nonconference slate. Meanwhile, Northern Arizona improves to 3-3 overall and 2-0 in Big Sky action. NAU has now defeated UM five-straight seasons, and holds a 28-7 all-time advantage over the Griz.
"I think this match will serve us well," said head coach Steve Ascher. "NAU has a challenging environment. Hats off to them, they play well at home and use the altitude to their advantage. But I think we learned some lessons and will grow from it."
For the second-straight time and the third time this season, Montana was on the cusp of an opening-round upset in the doubles competition by splitting the first two matches and forcing a tiebreaker in the third before coming up short.
Junior Bianca Bostrom and freshman Maria Goheen picked up their first doubles win as a pair on court two, defeating the Jacks' Tomasetti/Millard pair 6-4 to split with court three.
On court one, Julia Ronney and Olivia Oosterbaan battled back and forth with NAU's Sosnowska/Bland pair, but couldn't hang on in the tiebreaker, falling 7-6 (1).
"We were right there in doubles, and I'm proud of Bianca and Maria for getting that win," said Ascher. "They played a little better than us in the breaker, but it was a solid effort from Julia and Olivia."
Montana similarly dropped the all-important doubles point at Denver just two weeks ago and against Minnesota earlier in the month, indicating positive results could be in store as the remainder of the league schedule plays out this spring.
The momentum of a strong start didn't translate over to singles for the Griz, with preseason favorite 'Jacks taking straight-set wins on all six courts.
Goheen built an early 3-0 lead over NAU's Emilie Haakansson on court four but ran out of steam, falling 6-4, 6-1.
The nation's No. 44-ranked and two-time defending Big Sky Player of the Week Chiara Tomasetti made quick work of Ronney - Montana's first-team All-Big Sky pick from a year ago – on court one, showing once again she is a favorite to repeat at league MVP.
Montana's trip to Arizona won't get any easier this weekend as the Griz remain in Flagstaff to take on Mountain West powerhouse New Mexico on a neutral court Friday at 10 a.m. UM will then travel to Tucson to cap the weekend with a Saturday doubleheader against San Francisco and the Arizona Wildcats.
