It was another close but no cigar doubles performance for the Montana women's tennis team with the point once again decided in a tiebreaker, as the Grizzlies dropped a 4-0 neutral-court decision to the New Mexico Lobos in Flagstaff on Friday.
Â
For the third-straight match, the Griz (1-8) were within striking distance of claiming the important point thanks to a 6-2 win on court one by Julia Ronney and Olivia Oosterbaan. With a loss on court three, the deciding match came down to Lauren Dunlap and Alex Walker on court three, with the Lobos pulling out a 7-6 (3) win to clinch the point.
Â
"It was a battle today," said head coach Steve Ascher. "We're putting ourselves in positions to win, and now we need to work on closing things out."
Â
With a 1-0 lead, New Mexico carried the momentum into the singles round and picked up three straight singles matches to clinch the overall win at 4-0.
Â
Ronney rebounded from a first set loss to force a tiebreaker in the second, eventually falling 2-6, 6-7 (5) in a nail biter.
Â
Dunlap picked up a win in the opening set on court four, but ran out of gas at altitude, falling 6-4, 2-6, 0-6. With a straight-sets loss on court three from Maria Goheen, the Lobos had all they needed to clinch the win.
Â
In matches that went unfinished, Oosterbaan picked up a 6-2 first set win on court two and was tied 4-4 in the third match when the overall event was called, and Claudia Reguant picked up her first set win of the year 6-4 on court five.
Â
Montana now travels south to Tucson for a doubleheader against the San Francisco Dons and the Pac-12's Arizona Wildcats on Saturday.
