Another day, another walk-off win

The Montana softball team, even more shorthanded than it was for Saturday's doubleheader wins, finished off a series sweep of MSU Billings on Sunday with a 6-3 walk-off victory at Grizzly Softball Field in Missoula.

Montana, down to 13 players for Games 1 and 2, won 4-2 in Saturday's opener on Kendall Curtis's walk-off three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth, then rolled to a 17-4 win in the second game.

On Sunday, with the score tied 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh and with two on and two outs, freshman Presley Jantzi pulled a Curtis and walked it off with a three-run shot for a 6-3 Grizzly victory.

"Being a freshman, you have the pressure of being in such a big moment. I just wanted to do it for my team, so it was the biggest adrenaline rush," she said.

"We pulled it off with 11 players today, so it felt good to do it for my team and as a freshman, doing it for myself in a Griz uniform."

It was a big day for the four freshmen who got the start, Jantzi in right, Hannah Jablonski at second, Grace Hardy at third and Kynzie Mohl at designated player.

After MSU Billings grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Montana answered with three runs in the bottom of the second, all the runs driven in by freshmen.

Hardy had an RBI single to center, Jablonski a two-run double to left-center.

"For us to be the ones who had all the RBIs this game kind of makes a statement that we can compete at this level in our first year in our first couple of games," said Jantzi. "It was huge for all of us."

MSU Billings pulled within 3-2 in the top of the fourth on a bases-loaded walk, then tied it in the top of the seventh on an RBI single up the middle.

With runners on second and third and two outs, Maggie Joseph ended the threat with a strikeout.

That set the stage for the dramatic seventh. Anna Toon had a one-out infield single, her third hit of the day, and Brooklyn Weisgram followed with a single to left, her second hit.
Â
A fielder's choice brought Jantzi to the plate with two on and two outs. A base hit would have won it. A home run was even better.

"It was fun to watch people step up and take advantage of their opportunities and excel," said coach Melanie Meuchel. "To watch them celebrate was really fun to see."

Allie Brock got the start and went five innings. She struck out seven to go with the 12 she had in Game 1 on Saturday.

Toon went 6 for 11 in the series, Julie Phelps 5 for 12. Four players drove in four runs, Jantzi and Jaxie Klucewich both scored four times.
