The Montana men's tennis team returns to the road this weekend for the fourth of its six-stop fall tournament slate, heading back down I-15 to Salt Lake City for the Utah Invitational at the University of Utah.
Â
Matches at the round-robin-style tournament begin on Thursday and will continue until Sunday. Play at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center begins at 9 a.m. each day. Utah will not be providing live updates from the tournament.
Â
The Utah Invitational will take a similar look and feel to two of UM's three previous fall tournaments, with a mix of top regional and Big Sky teams making up the draws.
Â
Montana will send one of its top lineups to Salt Lake to represent the Griz this weekend, with seniors Milo Benn, Ed Pudney, and Oisin Shaffrey leading the charge. Also making the trip are junior Lawrence Sciglitano, a singles finalist a week ago at the Idaho State Invite, sophomore Moritz Stoeger, and freshman Gustav Theilgaard.
Â
Set to compete against the Grizzlies this week are squads from Weber State, Utah State, Idaho State, Montana State, and the host Utes.
Â
With familiar opponents and a tournament format designed to maximize reps for the whole squad, head coach Jason Brown says the Utah Invitational offers his squad everything they are looking for in a fall tourney.
Â
"In my opinion, this tournament is the premier event of the fall, and I can't wait to go compete," said Brown.Â
Â
"Each player gets five singles and five doubles matches in four days versus top-flight competition. The University of Utah and their staff do an A+ job of running the event, and I think it gives us a true barometer for gauging our team's current strengths and weaknesses and fitness level."
Â
After three straight weeks of action, Montana will take a bye week in their fall tourney schedule following the Utah Invitational. UM returns to action on Oct. 29 at the Bulldog Invitational at Gonzaga in Spokane and caps the fall season Nov. 5-7 at the Peak Adult Open in Missoula.
