Griz win Big Sky opener

The Montana soccer team opened its Big Sky Conference schedule with a 1-0 victory at Idaho in the Kibbie Dome in Moscow on Friday night.
Alexa Coyle put the Grizzlies up 1-0 in the fourth minute on a goal directly off a free kick and Claire Howard made three saves for her 28th career shutout, leaving her one shy of tying the Big Sky record.
Coyle's goal, just 3:43 in, was the fastest goal scored under third-year coach Chris Citowicki and the fastest for the Grizzlies since 2015, when Mackenzie Akins scored 1:33 in against Nevada in a 1-0 road win.
"It was nice to get it early," said Citowicki. "It gave us a bit of confidence and put them on the back foot, which I like."
Coyle's goal gave her 16 for her career, which moves her into a tie for 10th in program history with Amy Wronski (1999-2001).
It was her second game-winning goal in two matches this season, the ninth of her career, four off the program record.
Idaho outshot Montana in the first half and had two corner kicks, but it was the Grizzlies who dictated pace and maintained most of the possession.
But the free-flowing nature of the opening half came to a halt in the second. There would be just five shots between the two teams in the second half as play got bogged down.
"They made some tweaks in the second half that made it harder for us to try to play," said Citowicki. "We had to be more direct. Kudos to them for making some adjustments that put us back under pressure.
"But it's conference play. If you think you're going to go into conference and everything is going to work out really well and it's easy, it's not. People work really hard and make adjustments."
Mimi Eiden took a team-high four shots and put one on goal, one of three saves made by Idaho keeper Avrie Fox.
Coyle took three shots, putting two on goal. Jaden Griggs, who did not play in Sunday's 3-0 home win over MSU Billings, took two shots, one on goal.
Montana outshot Idaho 10-9, the Vandals had one more corner kick. The match had 27 fouls.
"At the end of the day, you have to get results," said Citowicki. "You have to grind out results. It may not have been the most beautiful performance in terms of aesthetics, but we fought hard.
"(The players) did not want to lose this game. Even if it was going to be ugly, we were not going to lose."
The two teams will meet up again at 2 p.m. (MT) on Sunday.
