ALTERED SCHEDULE
Originally scheduled to play three matches at the SDSU Invite this weekend, the tournament schedule was altered on Thursday after Wichita State withdrew due to COVID-19 precautions. The three remaining teams will now play in a round-robin tournament, with both of Montana's matches coming on Friday.
The Grizzlies will play California Baptist Friday morning (11 a.m. MT) before taking on host South Dakota State in the evening (6 p.m.). Both matches can be streamed through Jackrabbits All-Access, with a subscription. Live stats are also available.
NO REST FOR THE WEARY
When competition concludes this weekend, the Grizzlies will have already played six matches through the season's first seven days. Making that even more impressive, the Grizzlies are playing deep into sets and matches.

SCOUTING CALIFORNIA BAPTIST

SCOUTING SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
Montana is 1-2 all-time vs. South Dakota State. The Grizzlies won a neutral-site match in 2005, before losing in straight sets the following year in Missoula and in four sets in 2007 in Brookings. In its 2005 win over the Jackrabbits, Montana recorded 17 service aces, tied for the third-most in school history.
LOOKING AHEAD
Following this weekend's action – and six matches in a seven-day period – Montana will finally get the chance to work on some of the things it has been seeing in matches. The Grizzlies will hold several practices next week in Missoula, before departing for Grand Forks, North Dakota, on Sept. 9, where they will face Green Bay, Drake and host North Dakota (Sept. 10-11).

NO REST FOR THE WEARY
When competition concludes this weekend, the Grizzlies will have already played six matches through the season's first seven days. Making that even more impressive, the Grizzlies are playing deep into sets and matches.
- Of Montana's first four matches, three have gone a full five sets.
- The Grizzlies have played 19 sets so far this season, with four extending past the traditional 25 points (2-2 record).
- Of the 19 sets played, eight (42.1 percent) have been decided by the minimum two points (6-2 record). Further, 11 sets have had a margin of three points or fewer (7-4) and 14 have been decided by five points or less (8-6).
NOTES FROM WEDNESDAY'S WIN
- Montana rallied from a 2-1 deficit to beat Seattle on Wednesday night. The victory gives Montana its second win of the young season, which already matches the team's spring win total.
- The match was Montana's first home contest of the season, and first time playing in front of a home crowd since November 2019. Due to two freshman classes, a handful of transfers and a COVID-19 season with no fans, of the 17 players on roster, just five had previously played in front of fans inside Dahlberg Arena.
- The Grizzlies hit .311 on the night (64-18-184), its highest hitting percentage since November 2019. It marked just the fourth time since the start of the 2016 season that the Grizzlies have hit above .300 in a match.
- After hitting a respectable .252 through the first three sets, Montana caught fire in Set-4 and Set-5 victories, hitting a combined .486 (22-4-37).
- The first three sets featured 31 tie scores and 15 lead changes, but Montana played from in front for the majority of the final two frames. The Grizzlies took at 2-1 lead in Set 4 and never looked back, forcing an early Seattle timeout at 8-3, before winning 25-17. Ironically, Montana's largest lead of the night came in a shortened fifth set. The Grizzlies again took a 2-1 lead and led from that point forward, leading by as many as six points.
- Senior outside hitter Elsa Godwin recorded a career-high 16 kills, and did so on .375 hitting (16-4-32). She also added nine digs and four blocks, with three of the blocks coming in the final two sets. She also hit her form offensively late in the match, recording five kills on nine swings (zero errors) in Set-4 and Set-5 wins.
- Godwin has been in double figures in three consecutive matches, and has reached at least nine kills in all four this season. On Wednesday, her 16 kills eclipsed her previous career high of 14, which was set last Saturday vs. Eastern Michigan.
- Senior middle blocker Peyten Boutwell also registered 16 kills vs. Seattle, and did so at a .520 clip (16-3-25). Dating back to 2010, Boutwell is just the fourth Grizzly to record at least 16 kills while hitting above .500 in a match.
SOARING IN THE STATS
- Montana out-hit Seattle, .311 to .214, and on the season are hitting at a .247 rate. Albeit early, and a very small sample size, but the .247 hitting percentage would break a school record, currently held by Montana's 1991 conference championship team (.240). For comparison, the Grizzlies hit .147 during their spring season and haven't hit above .200 for a season since 2013 (.201).
- The Grizzlies have out-blocked their opponent in three of four matches and are currently averaging 2.1 blocks per set (compared to 1.4 for their opponents). Montana has been in double figures for blocks three times in four matches.
