The Montana women's tennis team got back in the win column after sweeping Lewis-Clark State in both matches, (7-0, 5-2) in Saturday's non-conference doubleheader. The Griz (3-2) recorded their first sweep of the season at the LC State Tennis center in Lewiston, Idaho.Â
Â
UM won 10 of 12 singles matches on the day, and shutout LC State (0-2) in doubles coming away with six wins. The sweep improves the Griz to 3-2 on the season, giving them momentum going into next weekend's conference match versus Montana State.
Â
"I love the way we competed today. It was a strong effort and we responded well when the opponents stepped up. LCSC fought and competed well, so it was a good day on the courts. Lauren Dunlap found another level in staging a comeback against a driven opponent," said head coach Steve Ascher.
Â
In the first match of the day, Montana clinched its first doubles point of the season sweeping on all three courts to put the Griz up 1-0 over the Warriors.
Â
In singles, five Griz players rolled past the Warriors in straight sets on courts one, two, four, five and six: Grace Haugen, Olivia Oosterbaan, Ivayla Mitkova, Claudia Reguant and Rosie Sterk.
Â
Senior Lauren Dunlap was the only Griz to play in three sets after coming back from a first-set loss. Dunlap faced LC State's Beatriz Lambru, posting results of (3-6, 6-2, 6-4), helping the Griz sweep the first match. Â
Â
In the second match of the day, the Griz continued the momentum from earlier to sweep doubles yet again to put them up 1-0 over the Warriors.
Â
Grizzly Dunlap rolled past her opponent Elisiva Latu on court three, winning in straight sets (6-4, 6-1). Dunlap's quick victory put the Griz up two.
Â
Mitkova dominated in position four, beating LC State's Maria Silva in straight sets 6-0, 6-3.
Â
Oosterbaan and Haugen were the last to finish for the Griz, both defeating their opponents in straight sets to clinch the win for Montana.
Â
LC State was able to get two points on the board due to retirement by two UM players.
Â
The Griz will now look to start Big Sky Conference play, traveling to Bozeman to play Montana State on Sunday, Feb. 13 at 10 a.m.
