Griz shut out Seattle to take weekend sweep
2/5/2022 2:26:00 PM | Men's Tennis
Still riding the high of an upset win over Boise State, the Montana men's tennis team took care of business against Seattle University Saturday morning, defeating the Redhawks 4-0 in a match played to clinch at the Boas Indoor Tennis Center in Boise.
Â
With less than 14 hours between matches, the Griz shook off a short turnaround time from the previous night's action and cruised to a win in the doubles round against Seattle. All three of Montana's seniors then picked up straight-set singles wins on courts one, three, and six to seal the overall team win over the Redhawks.
The Grizzlies improved to 4-0 on the season with a pair of wins over Mountain West opponents on their resume. Seattle, meanwhile, falls to 1-6.
Â
"I thought we played really well today, considering the short turnaround time from last night. We approached it like we would for a Big Sky tournament match, and the guys responded," said head coach Jason Brown.
Â
"It was a workman-like performance today. We went out and took care of business. Our seniors played particularly well, so I'm really happy with the weekend."
Â
Oisin Shaffrey and Ed Pudney remained undefeated on the season as a doubles pair with a 6-1 win over Seattle's Krause/Frank duo.
Â
The senior/freshman duo of Milo Benn and Gustav Theilgaard then claimed the opening point for UM soon after with a 6-2 win over SU's Hall/Harrison pair to put the Griz up 1-0.
Â
Shaffrey opened the singles round by taking his second straight-set win of the weekend, beating Mats Krause 6-0, 6-4 on court three to put UM up 2-0.
Â
After winning the clincher against Air Force, Benn added his second dual win of the season soon after with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Lars Schmassmann on court six to extend UM's lead 3-0.
Â
Just as he did against Boise the night before, Pudney clinched the win for the Grizzlies, beating Filip Stipic 6-2, 6-4 on court one to put Montana up for good at 4-0.
Â
With mountains of momentum, the Griz now return to Missoula for a pair of home matches next week, with UM hosting Whitman and Whitworth in non-conference action.
Â
Montana opens the weekend against Whitman on Friday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. The Griz then face Whitworth the morning of Sunday, Feb. 13, at 9 a.m. Both matches will be held at the Peak Racquet Club. Admission is free.
