MISSOULA, Mont. – The Montana women's golf team kicks off its second tournament of the season this weekend in St. George, Utah. The team will be competing in the 2022 Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational for the fourth consecutive year.
The team will compete Thursday through Saturday, playing 18 holes each day. The 54-hole tournament will consist of 17 teams, with five teams coming from the Big Sky: Montana, Eastern Washington, Weber State, Northern Colorado and Idaho State.
Live scoring for the tournament can be found at GoGriz.com.
After competing last month at the Dual in the Desert, which took place at the Rancho La Quinta Golf Club in Palm Springs, head coach Kris Nord is excited to see his players compete in a tough, competitive tournament.
"We had a really good start down in Palm Springs with the entire team. Everyone got to play a lot of golf, which was great," said Nord. "It's a tough field. It's packed and competitive. We'll have our hands full to finish up near the top third of this tournament."
For this Invitational, Nord will compete with seniors Kylie Esh and Allison Sobol, juniors Jessica Ponce and Tricia Joyce, and freshman Kylie Franklin.
"We have a talented crew down here and I'm excited," said Nord.
Esh competed in four fall tournaments, scoring an average of 77.6. With the senior missing February's tournament, Nord is ready to get her back on the course. "This is her first golf of the spring so we need to get her back into the swing of things."
The last time the Griz made an appearance at the Lady Thunderbird Invitational was in March of 2021. UM placed 12th out of 15 teams in that tournament, shooting rounds of 324 and 314.
Having experience at the Sunbrook Golf Club gives the Griz a good idea of what's to come on the course.
"Other than Kylie Franklin, we've seen this course a lot which is good," Nord said. "It's a course that requires thinking your way around and not just hitting the ball long and far. You have to hit your spots and stay in play or it's very penalizing. We're hoping to have good course management for the next three days."
After the Griz conclude their weekend in Utah, they look to compete in the Red Rocks Invitational, taking place in Sedona, Ariz., at the Oakcreek Country Club. The two-day tournament is scheduled to kick off Saturday, March 19, and end Sunday.
