GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Montana women's golf team concluded its final round of 18 at the Golf Club of Estrella, scoring 303 on the day to help it finish fourth overall. Santa Clara came away first in the tournament, scoring rounds of 294, 298, and 300. Sitting in second and third were Northern Arizona (293-306-303) and Southern Utah (301-299-309). The Griz were nine strokes shy of clinching third place in the tournament.
Though Montana sat behind two Big Sky foes to finish the tournament, the Griz beat five other Big Sky Conference teams: Weber State, Montana State, Eastern Washington, Idaho State and Northern Colorado.
"Remarkably, our best two rounds were under real windy, harsh conditions, and our worst round was under the best conditions, granted, that was the first 18. So, I'm really happy with how we dealt with the conditions and didn't let them affect our play; we showed mental toughness the last 36 holes. It was really good to see because this is where I feel like we should be," said head coach Kris Nord.
Senior Kylie Esh led the team throughout the weekend, tying for eighth overall in the tournament and scoring 75 in the last round of 18. The senior logged five birdies on the day, helping her score the second-lowest on the team in the final round.
Tricia Joyce had herself a day, scoring one over par and finishing the day with two birdies under her belt. Scoring 73 tied for Joyce's third-best performance of her career. Joyce tied for 16th in the tournament thanks to her third-round performance.
Jessica Ponce stayed solid per usual, scoring 76 on the day. The Grizzly recorded one birdie to help boost her scores, helping her tie for 18th overall.
Emmy Sundby continued her solid stretch of play, scoring 79 in the final 18 and tallying one birdie. The junior finished the tournament sitting tied for 23rd.
Senior Allison Sobol finished the two-day tournament scoring 79 and registering one birdie, which was her best round of the tournament.
Placing fourth out of 11 teams was the type of confidence boost the team needed going into the Big Sky Conference Championship this upcoming week.
"We are very happy with this weekend, but we all know that we left some shots out there. We definitely gained some momentum which is exactly what we needed going into conference," said Esh. "We are happy with the weekend and we're hoping to continue it into next week."
Nord had the same thoughts as Esh after this week's tournament and has some thoughts going into next week.
"I just think it's a boost of confidence. So, I think it's a plus. I just hope we get to play outdoors a little bit before we go to conference. I'm happy that we finished the tournament and, in my mind, our goal was to break 300 and we came close twice. Everybody knows we left shots out there so we're close to where we want to be."
The Griz will be back on the greens on Monday-Wednesday, April 18-20, to compete in the Big Sky Conference Championship. The tournament is scheduled to take place in Scottsdale, Ariz., at the Talking Stick Golf Club.
