MISSOULA, Mont. – The Montana women's golf team takes flight to Scottsdale, Ariz., to compete in the Big Sky Championship at the Talking Stick Golf Club. The Griz will compete alongside 10 other Big Sky teams starting Monday and will play through Wednesday.
Each day is dedicated to one round of 18, with tee times of 8 a.m. (MT). Live scoring will be available throughout the tournament and can be found on gogriz.com or golfstat.com.
The Griz come off a successful week in Goodyear, Ariz., placing fourth in the Bobcat Desert Classic. The team scored rounds of 311, 303 and 303.
After Montana's performance at the Golf Club of Estrella, head coach Kris Nord decided to take the same five to Scottsdale: Kylie Esh, Jessica Ponce, Tricia Joyce, Emmy Sundby and Allison Sobol.
Senior Esh led the Griz throughout the Bobcat Desert Classic, finishing tied for eighth overall, scoring rounds of 79, 72 and 75.
Joyce comes off the tournament finishing second on the team, thanks to her final two rounds in the tournament (80-76-73).
Junior Ponce was one stroke behind Joyce, scoring 76, 78 and 76 to finish tied for 18th overall in the tournament.
Sundby comes off a steady week, scoring rounds of 76, 77, and 79.
Senior Sobol finished the tournament scoring rounds of 80, 85 and 79, giving her some motivation for the Big Sky Championship.
Going into this week's tournament there are a couple themes Nord wants to focus on.
"We want to keep going what we started in Goodyear. We don't try and look at just results that often, but we would love to break 300 as a team," he said.
"We hope to do it more than one of the days, but we want to break 300. I think that's a good goal, though I do not know this course, so I don't know how it plays."
The Griz have yet to break 300 this season, but look to break the streak this week.
Since Montana is hosting the tournament, the team will have some familiar faces, like assistant coach Jim Mee.
"It'll be nice to have Jim there, too. It's very helpful to have him there," said Nord.
With the help of an additional coach, Montana looks to perform better and place higher than it did in last year's Big Sky Championship, where the Grizzlies placed ninth overall.
