Griz return to the courts at Utah Invitational

The Montana men's tennis team returns to action this week in Salt Lake City with the first of two fall tournaments hosted by the University of Utah at the George Eccles Tennis Center.

In their second event of the fall, the Griz will compete against some of the best competition in the region at the Utah Invite, set to be played out Friday through Sunday, Sept. 30 – Oct. 2.

Montana will pit its top four players against top-of-the-lineup athletes from Utah State, Weber State, Idaho State, and the host Utes in a mini-duals format.

"This tournament will be a great opportunity to test ourselves against some tough competition and take our first look at some of the conference teams we'll see in the spring," said head coach Jason Brown.

"It will give our guys a good measuring stick on where we stand and where we need to improve on. So, nothing but good can come out of this trip."

Set to compete for the Griz are UM's 2021 All-Big Sky doubles pair of Moritz Stoeger and Guillermo Martin.

Stoeger went undefeated in league play last season to earn second-team All-Big Sky honors while Martin is set to see his first action in a year after recovering from a wrist injury that kept him out last spring.

Gustav Theilgaard will also return to the court this weekend to kick off his sophomore season. The Dane was one of the top freshman in the conference last season and capped his first year with second-team All-Big Sky honors in doubles.

Brown will also get the chance to see North Alabama transfer sophomore Fernando Perez play in maroon and silver for the first time in Salt Lake.

Next up, Montana will head down I-15 once again to play in the Idaho State Invitational, Oct. 7-9 in Pocatello before heading to Albuquerque to compete in the ITA Mountain Regional.
