6/2/2023 8:43:00 AM | General, Men's Track and Field
Montana's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has adopted 'More Than An Athlete' as its slogan, hoping to showcase that each of them have interests, passions and pursuits beyond their field of play. Each week throughout the summer, Griz student-athletes will share personal, first-hand letters about who they are and what the slogan means to them.

Xavier Melice, Men's Track & Field
Xavier Melice has won multiple Big Sky Conference championships on the track, was named the Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year in 2019 and holds a school record in the 4x400-meter relay. He earned his undergraduate degree in 2022 and is currently working toward his Master of Business Administration degree. But he is More Than An Athlete, as described below, in his own words:
To me, 'More Than An Athlete' means that I am more than just my skills and abilities on the court or field. Growing up in a single mother household, I witnessed firsthand the value of hard work and dedication. My mother worked tirelessly to provide for me, and seeing her commitment inspired me to pursue my own career path.
Over the last two years, I have progressed from a part-time, entry-level position at NuWest Group to my current role as a full-time account coordinator, where I assist health-care professionals in delivering quality patient care.
While I prioritize my studies and career, I also enjoy spending time with my friends and teammates. Being part of a team has taught me valuable life lessons, such as the importance of communication, teamwork and perseverance.
I believe that being a well-rounded individual involves more than just excelling in one area, which is why I strive to maintain a balance between my academic and professional goals and my personal relationships and interests.
As a Griz athlete at the University of Montana, I have been given the incredible opportunity to represent my school. This experience has taught me the importance of being a positive role model and giving back to my community. I am committed to making a difference through my actions and using my platform as an athlete to inspire and uplift others. 'More Than An Athlete' means that I am not defined solely by my athletic abilities, but rather by the values and principles that guide my life both on and off the track.
