Pilots fly past Griz 7-0 in Portland

The Montana women's tennis team suffered a 7-0 loss to the Portland Pilots of the West Coast Conference to open the teams' two-match trip to Oregon on Friday afternoon at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center.
The Grizzlies fell to 1-8 on the season after dropping the opening doubles round and losing all six singles matches in straight sets.
Portland moved above .500 on the year to 6-5, now with three wins over Big Sky teams also in the bank.
"We used this experience of paying a good Portland Pilots team to improve today. It was an adjustment playing at sea level and as the match progressed, we started finding our footing and pushing deeper into sets," said head coach Steve Ascher.
"We will use what we learned today in preparation for our conference opener Sunday."
UM trailed the match from the get-go, going 0-3 in doubles matches to go down 1-0 in the team score.
Hailey Murphy and Kelsey Phillips teamed-up on court one for the closest match, falling 6-4 to UP's Rouf/Pethybridge pair.
In singles, Murphy moved to the top of the lineup and played on the No. 1 court for just the third time this season.
She put-up UM's most competitive result of the day as well in a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Sally Pethybridge, sliding her season record to 6-3 – still the most wins for Montana on the year.
Grizzly junior Grace Haugen made her return to the lineup after missing two weeks with injury.
She was slow out of the blocks in her return but nearly forced a third set, falling in a second set tiebreaker 6-0, 7-6 (3), to Aleksandra Dimitrijevic on court three.
Montana now turns its attention to the Big Sky Conference opener at Portland State on Sunday, March 3, starting at noon (MT).
