The Montana women's tennis squad picked up its first team win of the season with a 7-0 sweep of Lewis-Clark State in a nonconference dual in Lewiston, Idaho, on Friday. The Griz move to 1-4 on the season with the win while LC-State falls to 1-4.
Montana rested the reining Big Sky Player of the Week Grace Haugen and last year's conference Freshman of the Year Kelsey Phillips in favor increased reps for the bottom of the lineup and reserve players against the Warriors.
Despite the two top line players sitting out the Griz didn't miss a beat, cruising through the doubles round and winning five of the six singles matches in straight sets. Four Grizzlies picked up their first wins in both singles and doubles as individuals this season in the team victory.
"We changed partners up in the doubles and the team responded with energy and vigor. In the singles LCSC came to battle and we had to think through some good strategic situations. It was fun to see the team tested in moments and stay mentally engaged and work through it. The win feels good," said head coach Steve Ascher.
Senior Rosie Sterk partnered with junior Shivika Agrawal in doubles and Sterk earned her fourth opening-round win of the season. Sterk also moved up to line one in singles and picked up her first win, coming through in a first set tiebreaker and blanking Heidi Moyho in the second to win 7-6 (3), 6-0.
Freshman Kate Prichard earned her second win of the year in singles playing on court three, beating Naiara Montero in straight sets (6-1, 7-5).
Sophomore Piper Freeman, a transfer from Loyola Marymount, earned her first dual win in maroon and silver as well, clinching the victory for UM on court two with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Rayana Shah.
The Griz now return to the practice court for a three-week training block before opening Big Sky at Weber State on Feb. 22.
