The Montana women's tennis team started on its quest for a second consecutive Big Sky title with a convincing road win on Saturday, leading bell-to-bell in a 6-1 defeat of Weber State in Ogden. The Griz swept the doubles point and took five of the six singles matches to secure the win.
UM improves to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in league play with the victory and keeps the Wildcats winless at 0-10 overall and 0-1 in the conference so far this season.
"That was a great win. We got off to a good start by sweeping the doubles and earning the point. In singles we continued to get better as we played. As matches progressed, we started playing freer and were finding better answers. I'm really proud to get a road win to open conference play," said head coach Steve Ascher.
Montana clinched the opening doubles point in short order, with Monika Fizova and Kate Prichard earning a 6-3 win on court two, followed by Grace Haugen and Rosie Sterk improving to 4-1 together on the year with a 6-4 win on court one. Kelsey Phillips and Olivia Moir completed the doubles sweep with a tiebreaker win 7-6 (2) on court three.
In singles, Haugen remained unbeaten in her senior season, collecting a win when Sydney Schnell retired with Haugen leading 2-1 in the first set. Fellow senior Rosie Sterk picked up her second win of the season, rolling over Alicia Morales 6-1, 6-2 on court three.
The Griz rolled out an underclassmen lineup on the remaining four singles courts, with a sophomore and two freshmen earning wins in the three of the four.
Fizova improved to 2-2 on the season with a 6-1, 6-2, win over Savannah Johnson on court five and Moir improved to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Aleks Bozinovska on court six for a pair of convincing victories at the bottom of the lineup.
Last year's Big Sky Freshman of the Year Kelsey Phillips rounded out the winning for the Griz on court two, beating Cindy Li in a third-set superbreaker 3-6, 6-5, 1-0 (5) to give UM six out of seven total wins on the day. Prichard had the only loss for the Griz, falling 6-7 (6), 1-6 to Jessica Hill on court four.
Montana now looks to capture the momentum from Saturday's win and look for an upset in Logan as the Griz travel north to take on Utah State on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
