Grizzly senior Grace Haugen remained undefeated on the season as the Montana women's tennis team dropped a narrow 4-3 loss to the Utah State Aggies in Logan on Sunday to cap a two-match road trip to the Beehive State.
Haugen partnered with Rosie Sterk in doubles to claim UM's only win in the opening round before earning a dominant singles win, further cementing herself as one of the top players in the region again this season.
Her win in singles was one of three for the Griz against the Aggies. Freshmen Kate Prichard and Olivia Moir were the other two winners for UM on courts four and six, showing promise for the league slate ahead at the bottom of the order.
"We had a strong battle with Utah State. Great to see Grace continue to play at a high level. Kate and Olivia stepped up and engaged mentally in developing points and really pushing their opponents. We are continuing to use these non-conference matches to learn and grow to be ready for more Big Sky Conference matches soon," said head coach Steve Ascher.
The loss drops Montana to 2-5 on the season and gives the Griz a split on their trip south after beating Weber State 6-1 on Saturday in Ogden. Utah State improves to 3-4 on the year.
Haugen and Sterk started the day on a high note for Montana with the first win of the doubles round, putting the Griz up early with a 6-1 win over USU's Halvorsan/Sabikova pair on court one. Losses on courts two and three for UM would lead to a 1-0 lead for the Aggies heading into singles, however.
In singles she made quick work of Olivia Halvorsen on court one, allowing her opponent to win just a single game in a 6-1, 6-0 straight-set victory that knotted the team score 1-1 in the early going. In the two rounds combined she only lost two games, winning singles and doubles by a combined 18-2.
With another unbeaten weekend, Haugen improved to 5-0 in singles and 5-1 in doubles with Sterk on the season with wins over Colorado State, Air Force, and now Utah State among the highlights on her resume.
After the Aggies took wins on courts two and three to go up 3-1, Prichard gave UM another point with a victory on court four. She battled past Ana Sabikova in a pair of grueling sets 7-5, 6-4 to make the team score 3-2.
Utah State then clinched the win on court five before Olivia Moir made it a 4-3 final score with a win on court six, beating Kylee Sperry 6-4, 6-3.
The Griz now prepare for a nonconference road trip next weekend, heading to Spokane to take on Gonzaga and Seattle U at the Stevens Tennis Center.
