Griz drop finale in Phoenix
2/9/2025 3:05:00 PM | Softball
The Montana softball team dropped its final game of the season-opening GCU Kickoff Classic in Phoenix on Sunday, losing 8-0 in six innings to host Grand Canyon.
Â
The Grizzlies (1-4) had just four hits off GCU starter Maggie Place, while the Lopes (5-1) scored in the first, second, third and sixth innings.
Â
Grand Canyon had 11 hits off three Montana pitchers, who walked six and hit a pair of batters.
Â
"We didn't have a lot of energy today. We came out flat and got beat," said coach Stef Ewing.
Â
"We gave them way too many free bases, we let balls drop, we let them steal at will. And we didn't have quality at-bats. When those things compound, you're going to get that type of result."
Â
Montana had three of its four hits for the game in the first two innings, with Presley Jantzi, Madison Tarrant and JoJo Christiaens all singling.
Â
The Grizzlies' only other hit came in the top of the sixth when Anna Cockhill led off with a single to left.
Â
Grand Canyon scored three runs off Griz starter Siona Halwani, two off Grace Hardy and three more off Brianna Lachermeier.
Â
Montana, which scored a bulk of its 16 runs at the tournament in its opening 11-4 victory over Colgate, batted .279 over five games.
Â
Jantzi went 8 for 17 (.471), Tarrant 5 for 11 (.455) and Christiaens 3 for 7 (.429). Sveva Sweeney (6 for 16) and Anna Cockhill (6 for 17) both had six hits on the weekend, with Cockhill scoring four times.
Â
"We took one on the chin today but we'll fly home and get back after it on Tuesday," added Ewing.
Â
"We did some really good things this weekend and we have some things we have to work on. It's all part of the end-game, continuing to play better softball to get to where we want to be when we start conference play."
Â
Montana will play two games at UTEP's tournament on Friday, then get five games on Saturday, Sunday and Monday at New Mexico State's tournament.
