The Montana softball team closed out its road trip to Oregon with a 7-0 loss to Oregon State on Monday at Kelly Field in Corvallis.
Â
The Grizzlies (8-34) were shut out for the 11th time this season but did not lack for chances to stay in the game.
Â
Montana left runners on base all seven innings, including leaving the bases loaded in the fifth and the seventh innings. The Grizzlies stranded a season-high 11 runners for the game.
Â
"The opportunities were there for us to drive some runs in and we didn't capitalize," said coach Stef Ewing. "We have to have people step up and come through. That's what good teams do."
Â
Facing Logan Hulon, who defeated Montana twice when the teams met for a three-game series in Missoula last month, the Grizzlies got the start to the game they wanted.
Â
Anna Cockhill led off the top of the first with a single, stole her 25th base of the season and advanced to third on a wild pitch, but that's as far as she would advance.
Â
Montana went 0 for 10 on Monday with runners in scoring position after going 1 for 13 in its final two games of its Big Sky Conference series at Portland State over the weekend.
Â
"We need to find a way to stay composed in those pressure situations when we have runners on. We have to own our moment in the moment and not let it get too big for us," said Ewing.
Â
The Beavers steadily put up runs, using eight hits, three Montana errors, two walks and two hit batters. Oregon State scored one in the first, two in the third, three in the fourth and one in the fifth.
Â
Cameryn Ortega got the start and worked 2 2/3 innings. Brianna Lachermeier pitched in relief, as did Grace Hardy, who didn't allow a hit over 1 2/3 innings.
Â
"It's a lineup that doesn't give you a chance to breathe. They have quality and competitive at-bats," added Ewing.
Â
Hulon went the distance for the Beavers (17-16), allowing six hits while striking out nine.
Â
Presley Jantzi had two hits for the Grizzlies, who return to Big Sky play on Friday and Saturday with a series at Big Sky-leading Idaho State.
