Griz head to Spokane for Whitworth Peace Meet
4/3/2025 3:32:00 PM | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
The Montana track and field will take a full squad west this week to Spokane, Wash. to compete in the Whitworth Peace Meet at the University of Whitworth. The meet will open with the first field event at 11:55 a.m. (MT) and run until the relays at approximately 8:00 p.m.
Â
The meet was a late addition to the schedule for Montana after the Grizzlies and Montana State Bobcats elected to combine the Griz-Cat Dual with the Al Manuel Invitational. After taking a home meet off the schedule, head coach Doug Fraley looked to replace it with a closer trip so that he could bus a large squad.
Â
Whitworth checked off that box, but it's not just the proximity that makes this a good addition to the schedule. The meet will feature several D-1 programs at a new, high-level venue.
Â
"This is a great opportunity, Whitworth has a really good facility and a brand new track surface they put in last summer," Fraley said. "When the weather is good, it tends to be a very good place to compete, so we're excited about getting basically a full team down there and continuing to see where people fall in the roster depth."
Â
The forecast calls for sunshine and temperatures near the 60s on Friday. It will be a nice change for Montana after they opened the season at home in wet, chilly, windy weather last weekend.
Â
There will be several other Big Sky opponents in competition in Spokane, giving the Grizzlies an early measuring stick.
Â
"It's very important to find a facility that you feel like you can have good performances at in all events against good competition," Fraley said. "I feel like we're going to have that at this facility with teams like Washington State, Idaho, and Eastern Washington attending."
Â
Montana had highs and it had lows at the Al Manuel Invitational, typical of any track meet let alone the first meet outdoors. Several Grizzlies carried over some momentum from the record-setting indoor season.
Â
Erin Wilde won the women's high jump and came within an inch of breaking her own outdoor school record by clearing 5-10. Fellow high jumper Patrick Kremer also picked up a week one win with a clearance of 6-8.75 on the men's side, the 2nd best jump in the Big Sky this year.
Â
Montana's pole vaulters had a strong start with four women currently in the top eight of the Big Sky and five men in the top seven. The Grizzlies picked up wins on the track in the first weekend as well with Tara Ohlwiler taking the women's 200m in an impressive opening weekend and Braden Ankeny winning the men's 400m.
Â
The key for Fraley is to see his team continue to adjust to the outdoor conditions as they move along through the spring schedule.
Â
"I just want to see people get into the rhythm of the outdoor season. It's different than being indoors where everything is climate controlled and there aren't any variables involved," Fraley said. "It's part of the process of beginning the outdoor season is getting used to being outside and dealing with wind and any potential weather that you may have and still being able to focus on the task at hand."
Â
One of the biggest performances of the first weekend came from an athlete that didn't have to adjust from indoor, but instead just had to bide his time. Matthew Hockett had a throw of 223-2 in the men's javelin, setting a new PR and registering the 8th best mark in the NCAA West Region in the young season.
Â
Montana had three men's javelin throwers record top 50 marks in the West in the first meet of the year.
Â
The Grizzlies will look for improvements across the board in Spokane as they prepare for a busy stretch of the schedule. One benefit for Fraley in changing the schedule is that it allows him another chance to see his squad in action before they head to California for several meets to be held over a nine-day stretch.
Â
The Whitworth Peace Meet will serve as an audition of sorts for several athletes on the Grizzly roster. There are a limited number of tickets to California, and it might take a breakthrough performance in Spokane to earn a trip.
Â
"This is step two in the building process for our outdoor season," Fraley said. "We've got a lot of athletes that are trying to solidify a travel spot for the two meets in California in two weeks and so for several of our athletes this is a big meet in order to prove themselves and be able to get on the airplane to go to California."
