Montana's six spring sports accounted for one Big Sky Conference championship and two other top-three league finishes, and on Tuesday those Grizzlies made more news.
Â
Ninety-three student-athletes from those teams earned Academic All-Big Sky Conference honors, the highest total in the league.
Â
Men's tennis coach Jason Brown's team won the Big Sky tournament and had eight players earn academic honors, the highest total in the league in that sport.
Â
Coach Doug Fraley's men's outdoor track and field team, which placed third at the Big Sky Championships, had 27 athletes honored, also the highest total in the conference in that sport.
Â
Fraley's women's outdoor track and field team, which matched the men with a third-place finish, had 31 academic selections, the second-highest total in the Big Sky.
Â
Coach Jimmy Mee's women's golf team tied for second with six selections, coach Stef Ewing's softball team ranked third in the league with 16 selections.
Â
Coach Steve Ascher's women's tennis team had five players earn Academic All-Big Sky honors.
Â
Idaho State had 90 Academic All-Big Sky selections, Weber State 86. No other Big Sky school reached 70.
Â
"Congratulations to the most recent additions to this group for your commitment not only to your specific sport but the classroom as well," said Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill.
Â
"And thank you to each of our campuses for putting these individuals in a position to succeed across both realms."
Â
In addition to reaching the participation standard for their spring seasons, student-athletes needed to have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA to earn Academic All-Big Sky honors.
