Griz Athletics teams combine for nation’s longest winning streak
9/22/2025 12:25:00 PM | Football, General, Soccer, Volleyball
It has been a historic couple of weeks for Grizzly Athletics, as its fall athletics programs – made up of football, soccer and volleyball – have won 16 consecutive games.
In fact, Montana is the only Division-I team in the nation to win all of its head-to-head competitions during that stretch, which dates back to Aug. 31.
Volleyball – 8-0
The Griz volleyball team is doing things that haven't been done in decades, currently riding an eight-match winning streak for the first time in 31 years.
The Griz wrapped up non-conference play last weekend with victories at Gonzaga and vs. Seattle, to extend the winning streak and secure the program's third-best non-conference record in program history.
Additionally, Griz volleyball is on its best 11-match start to a season since 1999.
Montana currently ranks eighth nationally for digs per set (17.08) and in the top 20 percent for kills and opponent hitting percentage. Additionally, the Griz set a school record earlier this fall while hitting .416 in a win over Butler.
Of Montana's eight wins, six have come against teams with a winning record, including North Dakota State, Butler, Indiana State, Eastern Illinois, Gonzaga and Seattle.
Soccer – 5-0
Griz fans have become accustomed to Griz soccer having dominance, considering the program has won back-to-back Big Sky Conference titles and has lost at home just once in more than two calendar years. However, the current five-game winning streak is particularly impressive, especially considering the competition and level of domination.
Montana has not only won five consecutive games, but has done so in impressive fashion, posting four straight shutouts. Montana is out-scoring its opponents 11-0 in September, including: a 1-0 road win at UC Davis, the program's first-ever win over the Aggies; a 4-0 thrashing of Gonzaga, Montana's first over the Bulldogs since 2014 and just second since 2003; and a 1-0 win over Washington State, Montana's first over the Cougs since 2004. Gonzaga was in the NCAA Tournament as recently as 2023, while Washington State made nine NCAA Tournaments in an 11-year stretch from 2011-21. Montana's winning streak also includes a victory over Nevada of the Mountain West.
Football – 3-0
Griz football has opened its season with three straight victories, and currently ranks No. 4 nationally. Montana scored 63 points in last weekend's win over Indiana State, its second straight victory over a Missouri Valley Football Conference school.
The signature win, so far, was a 24-23, come-from-behind victory over No. 16 North Dakota on Sept. 13.
Good in all facets of the game, Montana currently ranks eighth in FCS for scoring offense and eighth for fewest touchdowns allowed, also ranking among the nation's best in a variety of other statistical categories.
Other Griz Teams Having Success
While football, soccer and volleyball are in their primary head-to-head competition seasons, other Grizzly Athletics programs are having success this far, as well. The Montana cross country team has had some highlights midway through their fall, including Zachary Giesch becoming the first Griz male cross country athlete to earn Big Sky Conference Athlete of the Week honors since 2003.
This past weekend, Montana's men's tennis team swept the competition at the Idaho State Invitational, claiming titles in both the singles and doubles brackets. One week prior in Pocatello, Montana's women's tennis team also had success, with Kate Prichard going undefeated to win the singles bracket and Kelsey Phillips and Meghna Anand winning the doubles bracket.
A total of 10 Griz athletes have earned Big Sky Conference Athlete of the Week honors already this season: Chloe Seelhoff (soccer, offensive, Aug. 19); Alexis Batezel (volleyball, defensive, Sept. 8); Eli Gillman (football, offensive, Sept. 8); Maddie Ditta (soccer, offensive, Sept. 9); Gracie Cagle (volleyball, offensive, Sept. 15); Ty Morrison (football, special teams, Sept. 15); Giesch (men's cross country, Sept. 16); Keali'i Ah Yat (football, offensive, Sept. 22); Batezel (volleyball, defensive, Sept. 22); Morrison (football, special teams, Sept. 22).
Big Sky Conference Play Set To Begin
The upcoming week will challenge Montana's winning streaks, as football, soccer and volleyball all open up Big Sky Conference play.
Griz volleyball plays next, opening up Big Sky action on Thursday against the defending Big Sky Conference champions. First serve is at 7 p.m., with the first 100 fans receiving a free Griz tote page. Tickets can be purchased online. As a reminder, GSA members, UM faculty and staff, and UM students get into all volleyball and soccer games for free.
Griz soccer also has a tough conference opener, traveling to Northern Arizona for a game that will kick at 9 p.m. Montana time. While Montana was picked to win the Big Sky Conference for the third year in a row, Northern Arizona was tabbed in the upper-half. Following that contest, Montana will return home for a Sunday matinee against Northern Colorado (12 p.m. kick).
For Griz football, Montana will open league play under the lights of Washington-Grizzly Stadium in a top-10 matchup and battle for the Little Brown Stein. Montana (No. 4/5) and Idaho (No. 10/8) are both ranked in the top 10 nationally, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN2.
Montana is a perfect 3-0 on the season. Idaho is 2-2, but both of its losses have come to FBS programs, by just three points apiece with Washington State and San Jose State kicking game-winning field goals in the closing seconds.
