Senior Raina Ports had her second top-20 finish in as many fall tournaments and the Montana women's golf team shot a final-round 303 on Tuesday as the Kalispel Invitational wrapped up at the Kalispel Golf and Country Club in Spokane.
After tying for 15th at last week's Yellowstone Intercollegiate in Bozeman, Ports shot rounds of 77, 70 and 76 at Kalispel to tie for 20th. Her second-round 70 matched her best round as a Grizzly.
Montana had scores of 306, 295 and 303 to finish ninth in the 14-team field and third out of the six Big Sky Conference schools competing.
Kate Bogenschutz (76-76-75) and freshmen Katie Lewis (76-76-75) and Hope Torres (77-73-77) all tied for 35th, with Torres overcoming an opening-hole triple bogey on Tuesday.
Torres played the next 17 holes at 2-over.
"It was definitely a good bounce-back after starting with a triple," said coach Jimmy Mee. "There are still some nerves on the first hole that we'll have to hash out and get her into a more comfortable situation."
After starting her day with an 8 on the par-5 10th, Torres had three bogeys and a birdie the rest of the way. Five of her first six collegiate rounds have now been 77 or better.
"She doesn't give up and keeps competing," said Mee. "That was a very solid performance."
Anna Stensrud (79-81-82) tied for 68th, Hannah Ports (80-82-81) finished 71st, Bella Johnson (80-80-84) placed 72nd and Salina Lui (81-84-82) tied for 73rd in the 83-golfer field.
Gonzaga's Grace Lee (67-71-72) finished 6-under to win by two strokes over Santa Clara's Kelsey Kim (72-70-70).
Santa Clara (295-284-289) won the tournament by 10 strokes over Gonzaga (288-297-293). Montana State (295-298-293) finished third.
Montana will compete next Monday and Tuesday at the Pat Lesser Harbottle Invitational in Tacoma, Wash. The tournament will be played at the Tacoma Country and Golf Club.
"We saw a lot of good things this week, a lot of good shots, but we definitely need to clean up our short game and our putting," said Mee.
"We had some chips we didn't get within that three-foot circle, and we need better speed control on putts from 15 to 30 feet. We can't be leaving them six feet short or ramming them six feet by.
"If we can clean up even half of that for next week, we'd be in a pretty good spot."
