The Montana women's tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 5-2 victory over the South Dakota Coyotes at the Huether Family Match Pointe center in Sioux Falls, S.D. on Friday afternoon.
The Griz improve to 1-3 on the season with a win to open their two match road trip to the Midwest. South Dakota suffered just its second loss of the year at 3-2.
"It was great to earn a team win today over South Dakota. Earning the doubles point and closing it out with a win in the tiebreaker 7-6 earned some good momentum to start the match," said head coach Steve Ascher.
"Of the six singles courts we ended up winning the first sets in four of the matches. I think the players did a good job of keeping the scoreboard pressure on and really competing well physically and mentally. Great to see us finish strong and close out the matches needed to secure the win."
Montana started on the front foot with a win in doubles to go up 1-0 in the team score. Shivika Agrawal and Monika Fizova paired up to beat USD's Didderiens/Doddridge pair 6-2 on court three to put UM up, but the Coyotes evened the round with a narrow 7-5 win on court two.
The Griz pulled out the court one decider in a dramatic tiebreaker when Kelsey Phillips and Meghna Anand outlasted Selena Bird and Cassy Marra 7-6 (5) to clinch the point and the momentum for Montana.
UM carried that momentum into singles when Anand opened the scoring for the Griz with a dominant 6-1, 6-1, win over Bird on court two that put the visitors up 2-0 in the team score.
Fizova added to the Grizzly tally on court three with an equally impressive 6-2, 6-2, win over Didderiens that made it a 3-0 score in favor of UM.
South Dakota then got on the board with a win on court six, but the Griz clinched the victory soon after when Phillips beat Anna Medvyedyeva 7-5, 6-2, in straight sets on court one to put Montana up for good, 4-1. Agrawal finished off the scoring for UM on court five with a bounce-back victory in a third set superbreaker, beating Keta Shavishvili 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (8) to make the final score 5-2 for the Griz.
Montana now turns its attention to Nebraska-Omaha in a neutral site dual in Sioux Falls set for Saturday evening at 5:30 (MT).
