The Montana women's tennis team dropped a neutral site dual to Nebraska-Omaha 1-6 late Saturday to cap its two match trip to South Dakota. The Griz split the weekend's matches at the Huether Family Match Pointe center in Sioux Falls, having beaten the University of South Dakota 5-2 on Friday afternoon.
The loss to Omaha drops the Grizzlies to 1-4 on the season while the Mavericks improved to 3-5.
Montana junior Kaylin Kielty scored Montana's lone team point with a win in singles and picked up a doubles victory as well with her partner Paige Bott, a win that put the Griz in with a shot to claim the all-important doubles point. A tiebreaker on court three went the way of the Mavericks, however, and UM started from behind 0-1.
In singles, Kielty pushed through a tiebreaker in her first set to and hung on to beat Omaha's Corrine Barber 7-6(8), 6-4, on court six to seal UM's one victory on the day. She improved her singles record to 2-1 on the season, now holding wins over opponents from Utah and Omaha.
"We started the match off with a tight battle for the doubles point. It came down to another tiebreak at third doubles and Shivika (Agrawal) and Monika (Fizova) competed well. It's great to be getting in matches where there are points on the line and players are working through the nerves of the close moments," said Ascher.
"Great to see Kaylin come through with another hard-fought win in singles. She was able to compete well at the end of the first and second sets. Fun when the matches get to winning time and players step up and play smart tennis."
The Griz now enter a two-week training block before heading to the Palouse to face Lewis-Clark State and Washington State Feb. 21-22. The Griz then open Big Sky Conference play with their first home match of the year against Sacramento State on Feb. 27 in Missoula.
