The Montana women's tennis team returns to action this week with a two match trip to Portland. The Griz open the series with a nonconference dual against the University of Portland on Sunday, then face Portland State in a Big Sky dual on Monday.
Â
THE SLATE: Montana (2-8, 0-3 BSC) looks to get back in the win column on the heels of four-straight losses, three to start conference play. They'll first get the chance against the Pilots (3-5), who have two-straight wins on their resume, including a 4-3 victory over Portland State two weeks ago.
Â
The Vikings (4-3) enter Monday's match with four wins this season but remain winless against D-I opponents. UM will get a Treasure State measuring stick on Sunday when PSU opens conference play against Montana State.
Â
COVERAGE: Sunday's dual at Portland will feature both live scoring and a live video stream from the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center, with links available on UM's schedule page at GoGriz.com/WTEN. Monday's conference dual at Portland State will have no live coverage.
Â
A GLIMPSE AT THE GRIZ: UM junior Kelsey Phillips remained undefeated in Big Sky play last week with a pair of singles wins on the road. The Grizzly No. 1 ran past Idaho's top line player Chenyue Xu in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow. Phillips followed that up with an epic three set win over Eastern Washington senior Leandra Nizetic, taking a first set tiebreaker before holding on 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-5, to earn UM's nomination for Big Sky Player of the Week.
Â
The wins come two weeks after a major upset when Phillips beat the defending Big Sky tourney MVP Reese Walker of No. 50 Sacramento State in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Â
Phillips is now 6-4 in singles on the season, the most wins of any Grizzly. Freshman Meghna Anand and sophomore Monika Fizova are UM's two other winningest players with three wins each.
Â
UP NEXT: Montana heads to the sun in St. George, Utah for a pair of nonconference duals. The Griz open against future Big Sky opponent Utah Tech on Friday, March 27, before taking on Tarleton State in a neutral site dual on Saturday, March 28.
Â
Two days later the Griz return home for three-straight home matches, hosting New Mexico State on Monday, March 30, in the final nonconference dual of the season. UM also hosts Northern Arizona on April 4 and Idaho State on April 5.
