The Montana women's golf team shot a 315 on Monday as the Bobcat Desert Classic got underway at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz.
Â
The three-day, 54-hole tournament is the Grizzlies' final event before next week's Big Sky Conference Championship, which will be held at Wigwam Golf Club in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
Â
Kate Bogenschutz shot a 6-over 78, while Raina Ports, Bella Johnson and Katie Lewis all shot 79.
Â
"We had a mixture today. Some people hit it well but didn't putt very well, then the people who were putting it okay weren't giving themselves any opportunities," said coach Jimmy Mee.
Â
"We'll spend some time on the range and putting green (this afternoon) and try to get a little dialed in before hopefully getting after it tomorrow with a good attitude."
Â
Montana State, which shot a 1-under 287, leads a tight leaderboard. Seattle (289) is two strokes back, Weber State (290) is three strokes off the lead. North Dakota State and Portland State both shot 292.
Â
Seven golfers were under par for the first 18 holes, with NDSU's Avery Bartels carding a 67, with four birdies and an eagle on the 505-yard par-5 8th.
Â
Seattle's Zoe Rubichon shot a 69. Five players came in at 71, another 10 played the course to even par.
Â
Bogenschutz is tied for 50th. Ports, Johnson and Lewis are tied for 58th in the 80-golfer, 13-team field.
Â
Competing in their first tournament in more than six months, since the Sun Mountain Intercollegiate in Missoula in early October, Hope Torres shot an 80, Salina Lui an 82. Both are competing as individuals.
Â
"They've been working hard and putting in a lot of work," said Mee. "It will be fun to see what happens over the next couple of days, now that they've got their feet wet and are back in the competitive mix."
Â
Torres is tied for 67th, Lui is in 75th place. Hannah Ports shot an 84 and is in 78th place.
