Freshman Katie Lewis matched her best collegiate round on Wednesday as play at the Bobcat Desert Classic concluded at the Golf Club of Estrella in Goodyear, Ariz.
Â
Lewis was even par through 14 holes and finished at 2-over 74, the Grizzlies' best round at the 54-hole tournament and the freshman's best round since the Yellowstone Intercollegiate back in September.
Â
Lewis had back-to-back birdies, first on the 505-yard, par-5 8th, then on the 308-yard, par-4 9th, matching the number of birdies she totaled on Monday and Tuesday, when she shot 79 and 81.
Â
"You could tell she was having some fun today and swinging the club freely," said coach Jimmy Mee. "Fun to see her enjoying the game and swinging aggressively and playing like she knows how to play."
Â
Lewis (79-81-74) finished 58th, two strokes behind Kate Bogenschutz (78-79-75), who tied for 48th and has had Montana's low score at three straight tournaments.
Â
The Grizzlies (315-316-308) finished 13th out of 13 teams, with the Big Sky Conference Championship starting on Monday.
Â
"We got off to a rough start today but there was a good 10- to 12-hole stretch when we saw some fight," said Mee. "We got things back on the right track and got back to playing golf like we can.
Â
"We made some bogeys coming in but it was fun to see the fight come back and see us make some birdies and get back into the mix of it."
Â
Hannah Ports (84-76-79) tied for 71st, with Raina Ports (79-82-80) and Bella Johnson (79-80-82) tying for 73rd in the 79-golfer field.
Â
Competing as individuals, Hope Torres (80-82-79) tied for 73rd, Salina Lui (82-82-85) finished 79th.
Â
Seattle (289-289-295) held off Montana State (287-295-294) to win the team title by three strokes. Utah Tech (297-289-292) placed third.
Â
Wyoming's Kiley Reisner (74-68-69) won the tournament at 5-under. Seven golfers played the tournament under par.
Â
The three-day Big Sky Conference Championship will be held Monday through Wednesday at Wigwam Golf Club in Litchfield Park, Ariz.
Â
"We need to clean up our misses on our approach shots. Our driving has been great. We missed in the wrong spots that made an impossible up-and-down," said Mee.
Â
"We have to have a really good game plan going into Wigwam so we're missing in the right spots. It's going to be course management, then making all our putts within five feet."
