Sophomore guard Cody Doolin scored on a lay-up with 35 second remaining to lead the University of San Francisco Dons to a 65-62 victory over the host University of Montana Grizzlies Thursday evening in UM's Dahlberg Arena.
The Grizzlies (4-3) took a six-point (59-53) lead over the Dons (6-3) with 3:58 left to play on a lay-up by senior forward Art Steward. USF scored six unanswered point after that, though, and tied the contest 59-59 with 2:07 to go on a lay-up by senior forward Angelo Coloiaro.
Montana then regained the lead on a three-point play by sophomore guard Kareem Jamar, making it 62-59 UM at the 2:02 mark. But Doolin's three-pointer with 1:40 left tied it a 62-all, and then Doolin made the game-winner about a minute later.
The Dons of the West Coast Conference took the lead in the opening minute on two free throws by junior forward Perris Blackwell, and the game remained close throughout the first half, USU taking a 34-28 lead at intermission.
Montana took its first lead of the game, 50-48, with 8:01 remaining on a three-pointer by redshirt freshman forward Mike Weisner. There were just two lead changes in the game, and four ties, with the final deadlock 62-62, followed by Doolin's game-winner.
"We have got to get dialed in at the end of games," said an obviously disappointed Griz head coach Wayne Tinkle. "We need to finish plays on the offensive end and make plays on the defensive end, and we are not doing that. "We have got to stay hungry and humble," Tinkle said. "We just didn't start the game that way, a couple of silly fouls and two of our starters are on the bench because we just didn't pay attention to the little things."
Steward scored a season and team-high 17 points and also had a game and career-high 10 rebounds to record his first ever double-double. Jamar was also in double figures with 12, while senior guard Shawn Stocktontallied a career-high 10 points - all of them coming in the first half. Steward also had a career-high 4 blocks.
Senior guard Rashad Green led USF with a game-high 18 points and a team-high 9 boards. Caloiaro added 15, and Doolin had 11, nine of them coming in the second half.
The Griz are at Oregon State (5-1) this Sunday, Dec. 4, with a 6:00 p.m. tip-off in a game that televised by Root Sports. USF hosts Pacific Union Sunday afternoon.
