Grizzlies fall to Cougars

The University of Montana women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to Washington State Saturday in Pullman, Wash.
The Cougars dominated the Grizzlies throughout the dual winning 3 out of 3 doubles matches and six of six in singles play.
The Grizzlies knew coming into the dual that they were up against a powerful opponent. Two of the six in the lineup for the Cougars hold a national ranking and another holds a top 20 regional ranking.
"We're playing a good brand of tennis," said coach Steve Ascher. "Washington State is just a really strong team."
Freshman Sasha Carter, in the No. 2 match, faced off against nationally ranked Liudmila Vasilieva. Carter was bested 6-4, 6-4.
Fellow freshman Precious Gbadamosi was paired against the Cougar's other nationally ranked player Elizaveta Luzina. She lost in straight sets 6-3, 6-1.
Vasilieva and Luzina are ranked No. 101 and No. 123 respectively.
Junior Heather Davidson wasn't across the net from a slouch either. In the No. 1 match Davidson lost to Elisabeth Fournier 6-1, 6-2. Fournier is ranked No. 20 in the Northwest region.
Sophomore Maddy Murray lost in the No. 6 match to Olga Musilovich in three sets. Murray opened up with a decisive win 6-2. The second set was a battle that saw Musilovich take the upper hand and the momentum late winning 7-5. Murray lost the tie breaker 10-6.
Sophomore Ashley Mackey was the only other Grizzly to win a set on the day. Mackey showed promise coming out with guns blazing and a 6-3 first set win. Unfortunately her momentum would end there dropping the next two sets 6-0 and 6-3.
The Grizzlies will complete their road trip Sunday when they face Idaho at 8:30 a.m. MT in Pullman. The Grizzlies won a close one, 4-3, in a showdown versus the Vandals a year ago. Senior Lauren Gibson is the only remaining Grizzly that posted a victory in that match.
