Women’s tennis sees growth at ITA Regionals

MISSOULA - The Montana women's tennis team gained valuable experience against some of the top competition in the West at the ITA Mountain Regional Championships in Provo, Utah, over the weekend.
Emma Marais and Monika Fizova highlighted the tournament for the Grizzlies, each earning a singles victory against strong regional competition.
"This week we gained a ton of experience playing against the best competition in the Mountain Region. The tournament gave the players opportunities to really push and fight hard to win sets and extend matches into situations where they can come out on top," said head coach Steve Ascher.
Marais took down Tana Christopulos of Air Force in a third set comeback 6-4, 1-6, 10-6. Montana's other win of the weekend came from Fizova, who knocked off Utah Tech's Sophie Dowdell in straight sets 6-4, 6-2, with both wins coming in consolation draws.
"I loved how we kept finding ways to push our opponents and spend as much time under tension as we can," Ascher said. "Cool to see Emma and Monika earn solid wins. They stepped up and it was great to see them get the wins."
Montana will take the lessons from the regional tournament back to the practice court as the Grizzlies prepare for their final event of the fall season at the Gonzaga Bulldog Classic, held in Spokane, Washington, Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
"This was a weekend where we took steps forward in how we want to compete in preparation for our last tournament in a couple weeks at Gonzaga," Ascher said.
