Griz pick up two wins at Weber State Invite

The Montana women's tennis team earned a pair of wins at the Weber State Invitational over the weekend in Utah.
Sophomore Kamila Slovakova took a back draw singles win over Emma Roberts of the host Wildcats. Missoula native Remi Demblans-Dechans and her partner Emma Marais also picked up a doubles victory in the round of 16 before bowing-out in the consolation bracket.
Each team in the Big Sky sent its top two singles and top doubles players to Ogden, with the winners of the Weber State Invite determining who will represent the conference at the NCAA Fall Championships in November.
"I think the tournament overall was a success. The players competed well and loved the chance to earn a spot at the NCAA's," said head coach Steve Ascher.
Marais and Demblans-Dechans won their first doubles set of the tournament in a tiebreaker, beating Weber State's Savannah Johnson and Tori Jeppson 8-7(5) to advance to the quarterfinal. There they fell to the eventual doubles champion Rainke/Ludwig pair from NAU 8-2.
"Emma and Remi earned a hard-fought win in their first round and then lost to the #1 seed in the next round. They both served well and played an exciting brand of tennis looking to capitalize on chances to be the aggressor in the match," Ascher said.
In singles, Slovakova rebounded from two losses in the main and consolation draws to cap the tournament with a win in extra matches, defeating Roberts in a long third set tiebreaker 6-1, 4-6, 1-0(10).
"Kamila gained experience from a tough first round match and got a win in the back draw. She competed well running her opponent side to side in long rallies and finding ways to outlast her. It was a well-deserved win in a competitive match," Ascher added.
Montana now will take a week of prep before heading to Provo for the premiere event of the fall season, the ITA Mountain Regional, hosted at BYU Oct. 13-17.
