MISSOULA – The Montana women's tennis team wrapped up its fall season at the Gonzaga Bulldog Classic in Spokane, Washington, over the weekend, earning three singles victories and one doubles win against regional competition.
Paige Bott, Monika Fizova and Rebecka Jerlardtz highlighted the weekend for the Grizzlies, each picking up a singles victory. Fizova and Kate Prichard also teamed up for a doubles victory, advancing to the quarterfinals before falling to a pair from Gonzaga.
"Finishing off the weekend with three solid singles wins by Paige, Monika, and Rebecka was great to see. The players dialed in, giving focused performances in their tactics and stepping up in how they were striking the ball and owning good court positions," said head coach Steve Ascher.
Fizova earned a singles victory over Eastern Washington's Aneliss Zamfirescu, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. Jerlardtz also picked up a win against Eastern Washington's Olivia Marais, rallying after dropping the opening set to win 5-7, 6-4, 10-6.
Montana also picked up a win in doubles, with Fizova and Prichard teaming up to defeat Eastern Washington's Aneliss Zamfirescu and Sol Junquera Martinez 6-3 in the round of 16. The duo advanced to face Gonzaga's Karla Brown and Sveva Zerpelloni in the quarterfinals, falling in a close 7-6 (8) match.
"It was great to see Monika and Kate step up in doubles. They won their first round match and earned match points against Gonzaga. Their energy and movement was good all weekend," Ascher said.
The Grizzlies will take the experience from the fall season back to the practice court as they begin preparing for the spring season.
"This weekend really helped us gain clarity on how we need to compete and play and what we need to focus on in our training the next couple months to prepare to be great competitors to start the spring," Ascher said.
