
Grizzlies fall to BYU Cougars 85-60

Forward Brandon Davies registered a double-double and teammate Tyler Haws added 18 points as the BYU Cougars defeated The University of Montana Grizzlies 85-60 Wednesday evening in a non-league contest in Energy Solutions Arena (attendance 12,378), the home of the NBA's Utah Jazz.
The Grizzlies (3-2) took an early 2-0 lead on a jump shot by junior guard-forward Kareem Jamar, but the Cougars (5-2) went on a 14-0 run after that, and when senior guard Craig Cusick nailed a three-pointer BYU took a 14-2 lead with 16:12 left until halftime and never trailed again. The Cougars led 42-31 at intermission.
Montana cut the lead to eight points twice in the second half the first was 51-43 with 14:27 to go on a pair of free throws by true freshman center Andy Martin, and the last one came with 12:08 remaining on a jumper by Jamar.
Jamar had team-highs of 17 points and 9 rebounds, while sophomore guard Keron DeShields was UM's only other player in double figures with 12 points. Martin had 6 points and 3 rebounds in his first career start, and fouled out with 4:29 left to play.
UM's leading scorer, senior forward Mathias Ward, had just 7 points and played only 19 minuutes, and fouled out with 8:24 left to play. Ward, who was recently named the Big Sky Conference's Player of the Week, had entered the game averaging 15.8 points a game.
Davies, a 6-9, 235-pound senior, had game-highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds, along with 4 steals. Cougar sophomore forward Josh Sharp added 13 points and 8 boards.
BYU capitalized on 17 Griz turnovers (the Cougars had 7 TOs) and scored 26 points off of Montana's miscues. The Cougars, who had a substantial height advantage, out-rebounded the Grizzlies 35-30.
The Grizzlies play the San Francisco Dons Friday, Nov. 30, in USF's War Memorial Gym, in an 8:00 p.m. game. The Cougars are at Iowa State on Saturday, Dec. 1.
Montana was 19-of-49 from the field (38.8%) and made 6-of-16 (37.5%) three-pointers, while BYU made 30-of-58 shots (51.7%) and 9-of-21 (42.9%) treys.
