Grizzlies open conference play with sweep over Vikings

The University of Montana women's tennis team opened its conference season with a bang winning decisively, 7-0, over Portland State on the road Saturday.
The Grizzlies, coming off of a close win over the University of Portland Friday 4-3, had little trouble putting away the Vikings in a straight sweep.
The Grizzlies improved to 4-2 while Portland State dropped to 1-5. Saturday's match was the first Big Sky match for either school.
Junior Heather Davidson bounced back from her loss Friday to Portland's Anastasia Polyakova by trouncing Audrey Farr 6-0, 6-0. Davidson also pulled out her first win of the season with doubles partner Laurence Pelchat. The duo won handily 8-2.
"Portland State competed well and played a good match," coach Steve Ascher said of the school he formerly coached both the men and the women's programs.
"We played well today though, every one of our players stepped up and fought hard to earn the sweep."
The Griz lost only two sets on the afternoon. Sophomore Sasha Carter and senior Lauren Gibson both were pushed to a third set after dropping their openers.
Carter fell 2-6 in set one but went on to dominate Marti Pellicano 6-0, 6-3 in the final two sets while Gibson dropped a close opening set 7-5 before taking care of business in the second 6-2. Gibson won her tie breaking set 10-5.
"It was great to see both Lauren and Sasha pull out their three set matches after dropping the first set," continued Ascher.
Montana will look to complete its three-match road sweep with Seattle University Sunday at 10:00 a.m. (MT) in Portland, Ore. Results and a full recap will be posted on GoGriz.com concluding match play.
