The University of Montana dropped a 5-2 decision to Kansas in the Roger Knapp Tennis Center Sunday in the final day of competition in Des Moines, Iowa.

The loss was the second in three matches that the Griz played in Des Moines. Montana (6-4) lost to host Drake 5-2 Friday then bounced back Saturday with a 7-0 victory over Upper Iowa.

The Griz saw wins from junior Heather Davidson over Monica Pezzotti in the No. 1 match 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 and from freshman Laurence Pelchat in the No. 2 match over Paulina Los 4-6, 7-6(3), 10-6. Both were hard fought matches and great wins both players.

The wins at the top two spots has not been the usual for the Griz during their losses. In all of the Griz losses this season there have been no points scored in the one and two spots. Conversely, the points scored in Montana's losses (they have only been shut out once by Washington State in January) have been scored by the bottom of the lineup and that was not the case versus Kansas.

Montana was defeated in straight sets in matches three through six. Even Ashley Mackey, who has been on a hot streak winning her last seven matches, fell today in the No. 3 position. Mackey is now 8-2 in singles.

Montana also saw one doubles victory as Mackey and partner Precious Gbadamosi defeated Victoria Khanevskaya and Claire Dreyer 8-3.

"I thought we came out and played the doubles at the highest intensity level so far this spring," said coach Steve Ascher. "The wins at one and two in singles were great, and everyone raised their games today, which helps development tremendously."

The Grizzlies will travel to Boise, Idaho, to go head to head with Boise State Mar. 4.
