The University of Montana's women's tennis shut out the University of North Dakota Friday in Grand Forks to pick up its first win of the season.
Montana downed the Big Sky Conference newcomer UND to open conference play with a victory.
Sasha Carter and Maddy Murray defeated UND No. 3 doubles pair Megan Sween and Shaylin Prout to start Montana on an unstoppable role. Heather Davidson and Laurence Pelchat pulled out an 8-4 win against Stephanie Petsis and Callie Ronkowski to secure the doubles point for the win.
Singles competition proved to be a strength for Montana. The University of North Dakota couldn't pick up a win in any of the singles matches. UM No. 5 Precious Gbadamosi clinched the win for Montana as she defeated Stephane Biehn in two sets.
"The team came out and performed well in singles competition," said head coach Steve Ascher. "Going into anyone's home environment is always the challenge and being able to pull out so many matches is always good."
The No. 1 singles match was the only match to go past two sets. Davidson defeated Petsis in a super tiebreaker rather than play a full set.
"Heather played a intelligent third set super-breaker, fending off three match points down 6-9," said Ascher. "She would go on a streak of five straight points to pull out the match."
UM is back in action Saturday at 8 a.m. in Grand Forks to take on South Dakota State.
"Tomorrow is a new day and another opportunity to challenge ourselves against another unknown team and strive to improve our games," Ascher said.
The team will update its Facebook and Twitter pages with live match results. A full recap will accompany the completion of competition.
