Nevada picked up its first victory of the season and kept the Montana women's tennis team searching for the same with a 5-2 win over the Grizzlies Saturday afternoon at Gonzaga's Stevens Center in Spokane.
Â
Montana (0-4) won the doubles point for the first time this season, but the Wolf Pack (1-3), who lost 5-2 at Eastern Washington on Friday, won five of six singles matches to come away with the win.
Â
Eighth-year coach Steve Ascher used junior Stanzi Stuijt, a transfer from West Alabama, for the first time this season, teaming her up with freshman Lidia Dukic at No. 3 doubles.
Â
Montana fell behind after senior Haley Driver and junior Francis Dean lost 6-3 at No. 1, but Stuijt and Dukic came through with a 6-3 win, and junior Hannah Sulz and sophomore Cam Kincaid pulled out a 7-5 win at No. 2 to give the Grizzlies an early 1-0 lead.
Â
"Winning the doubles point was a nice change," said Ascher. "Stanzi came in and provided a spark that gave us a solid win at No. 3."
Â
The lead wouldn't last. Driver, Dean, Sulz and sophomore Catherine Orfanos all lost in straight sets in singles, putting Nevada up 4-1.
Â
Kincaid picked up her first singles win of the dual season with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5. Nevada's Adriana Gergelyova closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 (10-5) win over Dukic at No. 3.
Â
"We were competitive in singles, but we need to continue to work to put ourselves into better positions," said Ascher. "Everyone will continue to work hard to push this team higher."
Â
Montana will play just three matches over the next 47 days, hosting North Dakota, Montana State and Lewis-Clark State at the Peak Racquet Club in February.
