Grizzlies ready for desert showdowns

It's been nearly three weeks since the Montana women's tennis team last played, when it had an impressive three-match home stand at its Peak fortress against rival North Dakota, Montana State and Lewis-Clark. The Grizzlies now prepare for their greatest challenge yet in Sin City.
Â
On Friday the Grizzlies (3-4, 2-0 BSC) will face UNLV (16-0) at 11 a.m. (MT) at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas.
Â
The Grizzlies know going to Vegas to compete against the Rebel juggernaut will be nothing short of a major undertaking, but under coach Steve Ascher's leadership, the team's focus remains unwavering.
Â
"We train everyday skills that will allow us to be successful against every opponent we are going to face," he said. "We work hard not to judge the level of our opponent, but instill the belief to put our best self forward each time we take the court, whether that be practice or matches."
Â
When asked how a colossal upset would affect his program's national image, Ascher gave an answer that suits his pragmatic philosophy. "A win is a win. We understand some wins have more weight than others, but we try to put blinders on and play one match at a time."
Â
On Saturday Montana will face Southern Utah (1-11, 0-2 BSC) at 1 p.m. in Cedar City. A win against the Thunderbirds would move the Grizzlies to 3-0 in conference play, an opportunity they won't be looking to pass up.
Â
Instead of feeling stress or nerves starting what is going to be a month of road matches, the team seems more than ready according to Ascher. "It's exciting to head outside and get into the prime of the competitive season," he said.
Â
The Grizzlies will begin their next road trip next week starting with Northern Arizona.
