Montana falls to UNLV 6-1

UNLV has been rolling, full-steam ahead, since the season began. Against Montana the Rebels showed no sign of slowing down their winning streak. UNLV (17-0) defeated Montana (3-5) with a decisive 6-1 score Friday afternoon in Las Vegas, a match it controlled from the beginning.
When doubles started, the Rebels' onslaught began. At No. 1, Carol Zi Yang and Aiwen Zhu defeated Hannah Sulz and Cam Kincaid 6-0. At No. 2, Francis Dean and Catherine Orfanos triumphed against Anna Bogoslavets and Mercedes Lopez Velez 6-1. At No. 3, Iren Kotseva and Paola Artiga defeated Stanzi Stuijt and Lidia Dukic 6-2.
Down 1-0 Montana knew it would have to fight hard in singles for a win. Unfortunately, UNLV legitimized why they have not been defeated this season.
At No. 1, Dean was defeated by Zhu 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2, Dukic lost to Zi Yang 6-0, 6-1.
At No. 3, Sulz lost a hard-fought battle against Artiga 6-4, 6-3. At No. 4, Kincaid was defeated 6-0, 6-0 by Bogoslavets.
Orfanos, at No. 5, would give the Grizzlies their sole point with an intense 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) victory over Cristina Moroi. At No. 6, Ana Carbo lost to Kotseva 6-1, 6-1. Stuijt lost an exhibition match against Reka Szentes 6-1, 6-1.
A defeat is never easy, but under coach Steve Ascher's leadership the Grizzlies show little sign of letting this loss affect their road trip.
"We played and competed very well today," he said. "The team is learning from every experience right now. We're excited to play outdoors again tomorrow."
Montana plays Southern Utah (1-11, 0-2 BSC) at 1 p.m. in Cedar City on Saturday.
