Grizzlies’ rally stifled by Vikings
4/16/2016 5:43:00 PM | Women's Tennis
Matches this season at the Peak Racquet Club have been anything but predictable. Saturday was no exception as Montana (3-15, 2-6 BCS) was defeated by Portland State (6-9, 5-6 BSC) 6-1 in the second-to-last home match of the season.
Doubles began with a bang when the Vikings put on display their speed and agility, winning the doubles point with scores of 6-1 and 7-5.
The Grizzlies showed no signs of fear after the doubles point was rapidly concluded. Starting singles matches they waged a long back-and-forth battle, fighting to the final set.
Montana was down early 3-0 when the Grizzlies dug deep, mounting what appeared to be a historic comeback in the making. The comeback was prevented by the Vikings who dug deep themselves winning the match.
(4/16/2016) WTennis: vs. Portland State (4.16.16) Both Grizzly and Viking players alike would agree the fiercest match of the day came at No. 4, where Cam Kincaid fought through an early deficit and most notably cramps to nearly defeat Sabina-Elena Preda 6-7 (5), 6-2, 5-7.
Montana earned its point at No. 5, where Catherine Orfanos defeated Kelsey Frey 6-4, 6-1.
Both Montana and Portland State walk away from Saturday's match knowing both teams were putting all of their heart and energy into winning each point.
With Eastern Washington being tomorrow's opponent, the Grizzlies are excited knowing they can get revenge against a team that beat them early in the season 5-2 and damage EWU's chances of securing a top seed before the Big Sky tournament.
"We know they are going to really want to get another win against us," Orfanos said. "I think we all want to take them down and get a win for ourselves."
Tomorrow morning will be the final home match of the season before the Grizzlies finish their season on the road against Idaho State and Weber State. All fans are encouraged to come and support the team as it begins to close the final chapter of the season.
Montana will play Eastern Washington (11-10, 5-5 BSC) at 9 a.m. at the Peak Racquet Club.
