On the final day of the regular season, the Montana women's tennis team (4-17, 3-8 BSC) was on a mission to defeat Weber State (9-13, 8-3 BSC) before the Wildcats departed to Gold River, Calif., for the Big Sky Conference tournament.
After an intense showdown of back-and-forth matches, Weber State emerged the victors with a 4-3 win in their final home match.
An inspired Grizzlies team came out especially strong, winning the doubles point, something the Grizzlies' have been striving to accomplish every match. Up 1-0, the ensuing singles matches would show no lack of passion exhibited by either team.
Singles matches would prove to both Grizzly and Wildcat fans alike that nobody was leaving without playing their hearts out.
Lidia Dukic, at No. 2, would win the final match of her freshman season, defeating Kristi Elmer 6-3, 6-3. Cam Kincaid, at No. 4, had another solid performance, defeating Dominique Beauvais 6-1, 6-3.
Weber State would secure the final point of the match at No. 5, where Devi Hasan defeated Catherine Orfanos in three sets, 7-5 in the third, to prevent an upset by the Grizzlies.
Montana ends its season knowing it left everything on the court didn't let adversity or hardship affect the team's performance.
"We all learned how hard we have to compete in order to play against the best schools," Kincaid said. "Obviously the feeling of losing hurts, but it's a feeling we all have to experience in order to come back stronger next year."
Coach Steve Ascher, like his athletes, was equally proud of how his team performed in the final match of the season. "The team ended the season on a good note," he said.
With a long offseason ahead of them to tune up for next season, Ascher is looking forward to his experienced team returning to make a run at the Big Sky Conference championship.
"We will work hard to return the team to the highest level of competitiveness next season," he said.
After tremendous support from fans all season, Kincaid wants them to know their support has not gone unnoticed.
"To all of the fans who came out, I want them to know how much we appreciate the words of encouragement and the tremendous amount of support we received throughout the season," she said. "We all love representing the Montana Grizzlies and love playing for the Missoula crowd."
